Reverend Pastor

Barbara Dellaine Wortham Hughes

July 20, 1942 – February 23, 2021
“If I can help somebody as I pass along…then my living will not be in vain.”

This could have been the theme song for the life of a remarkable woman of God who enriched the lives of so many. Reverend Pastor Barbara Hughes joined her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, February 23, 2021.

Our beloved Rev. Barbara Wortham Hughes began her earthly journey on July 20, 1942 in Newborn, North Carolina. She was welcomed by her loving parents Rev. John Wallace Wortham and Rev. Dr. Margaret L. Wortham. She would thrive in their Christian home, immersed in the knowledge and of the power of God’s love.

Barbara moved to Denver, Colorado at the invitation of her brother, Attorney J. Wallace Wortham Jr., and continued her career in printing and publishing. A lifelong learner, she enrolled at Metropolitan State College. After a series of life-challenging illnesses, Barbara pursued and achieved a Masters of Divinity, specializing in Pastoral Counseling at Denver Seminary.

For over 35 years, Barba conducted Bible studies and prayer groups in her home, touching the lives of thousands across the country with conference call prayer groups, workshops and evangelism. She founded the Ex Nihilo Ministry, a fellowship of disciples dedicated to service study and prayer. She was a much sought-after evangelist, workshop leader and Bible teacher, known for preaching the Word with power and passion.

Barbara has a special commitment to youth. She founded Brothers and Sisters Taking Action (BASTA), an organization dedicated to education, leadership development and community service.

Barbara leaves her devoted daughter, Nikki (Myron) Hendley; brother J. Wallace (Gladys) Wortham Jr. of Peoria AZ; sisters C. Ophelia Jacobs of Chester, PA and Juanita Wortham of Huntersville, NC; “Little Brother” Bishop Kevin (Appie) Wortham of Jonestown, MI; godbrother Bishop Paul T. Veney or Harrisburg, PA; grandsons Miles and Langston Hendley; granddaughter Alefia Hendley; and a host of loving family, faith and spiritual family members to grieve her passing, but celebrate her homecoming.

Won’t He Do It? Won’t God Do It?
This powerful, powerful sermon was the last time that Living Hope Bible Church had the honor to have Pastor Hughes behind the pulpit. This message was delivered on October 18, 2020 during a time of fear and uncertainty. Pastor Hughes challenged us to “Get Up, Get Dressed, and Follow Jesus!”. Giving us also a brief testimony of a time when only God could have intervened in the miraculous way that He did!
A TRUE Home Going Celebration
